On November
9th, 2006, an agreement was signed by Madam Fayza Aboulnaga, Minister of
International Cooperation and the UNDP Resident Representative to launch in
Egypt North West Coast, an Egypt / UNDP Mine Action project. The project would
last for 18 months, as a first, pilot phase to be followed by a second phase
that may last for 5 - 6 years
The document identified four objectives
for the First Phase:
1.
The
creation at the Ministry of International Cooperation of a national focal point
called "The Executive Secretariat for the De-mining & Development of
the North West Coast" to coordinate among Egyptian stakeholders: Governmental, private and belonging to the
civil society,liaise with the International Partners for
Development of Egypt: States, UN, and other
International
and Non
Governmental Organizations and manage international assistance earmarked to supporting the objectives of the project.
2.
The
elaboration of strategy papers for media and communication and for resource
mobilization.
3.
The
conduct of De-mining activities in collaboration with the Egyptian Armed Forces
(the only body entrusted with handling Explosive Remnants of War).
4.
The
conduct of activities of victim assistance and mine risk education in
cooperation with UN relevant organizations (UNICEF) and Civil Society
Organizations, Local and International.
