The Executive secretariat celebrated for the first time ever in Egypt the “International Mine Action Day”. The event was held on April 22nd at the Diplomatic Club and attended by H.E. Fayza Aboulnaga, Minister of International Cooperation, H.E. Dr. Osman Mohamed Osman, Minister of State for Economic Development, H.E. Mr James W. Rawley, UNDP Resident Representative and a large number of representatives from various ministries, and civil society organizations as well as Parliamentarians, Foreign Ambassadors and the media.
During the celebration, the names of the wining designers of two commemorative Post Stamps that have participated in the competition announced last autumn to that effect were made public. After handing over the prizes and certificates to the participants in the competition, the two ministers issued the commemorative Post Stamps, under the title “Stop WWII in the North West Coast of Egypt”. Representatives of the survivors of mine accidents were then invited to read their messages addressed to World Community Leaders. The messages were mailed to World dignitaries and donors using the newly issued stamps to sensitize them about the problem and ask for their support. Copies of the messages as well as translations thereof were also sent to Heads of State and Government through diplomatic channels together with supporting documentation prepared by the Exec Sec.
